Magic Leap 2.0 Brings a More Realistic Virtual Reality Experience Last week, I had the opportunity to try out the upcoming Magic Leap 2.0 for myself. In one sense, it didn’t feel all that different than the Magic Leap 1.0 that we reviewed earlier this year. The headset is basically the same. The display is roughly the same size, and the inside of the headset has a similar color scheme and fit. But the sense of immersion that you feel while wearing the Magic Leap 2.0 feels way different than what we’ve experienced before. The reason for that, as Magic Leap describes it, is that it’s able to provide a more nuanced and convincing sense of depth and volume in VR. And the amount of information that you get from the headset is a factor in how immersive you feel. That is, the more information you get from the headset, the more it’s able to interact and connect to the real world. That’s why the Magic Leap 2.0 has a digital light field (DLF) display, which will supposedly be able to simulate a more realistic sense of the real world. With a DLF display, the headset can simulate where objects are relative to the viewer’s position in space, and use that information to create a sense of immersion. Magic Leap’s first headset was just a display on a headset that didn’t give you any information about how far away a virtual object is from you, which is why you couldn’t really feel all that much of a connection to the real world. But with the Magic Leap 2.0, that’s all supposed to change. The Magic Leap 2.0 will come with a new optical sensor that will be able to track your eyes and allow the headset to track where you’re looking, so the virtual world can react to where you’re looking at, which could make you feel as if you’re seeing the virtual world as if you were in the real world.
